Henna
Henna is made from the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). The leafs of the plant are dried, ground into a powder and then mixed with sugar and an acidic liquid like lemon juice to make a paste. Henna contains natural dyes which temporarily stain the outer layers of the skin. Essential oils are added to the paste to make the stain darker and give the henna a nice smell. The paste is then applied to the skin with a cone or sometimes a small squeeze bottle.
Is henna safe?
Yes, the henna paste is made with all natural ingedients and is totally safe. I mix mine with lemon juice, sugar and aroma-therapy-grade Tea Tree oil and/or Lavender oil.
How long does it last?
Henna can last between 1 and 3 weeks. How dark and how long the stain will last depends on a number of factors. Different henna powders give different results and some people take better to henna than others. Generally though, I think the after care is the most important for a beautifully dark and long lasting stain. Find out how to best look after your henna here.
Black henna
There is no such thing as black henna. Temporary tattoos promoted as black henna will most likely contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine) which is a very dangerous chemical. It can cause allergic reactions, blisters and even life long scars!
